:: Rasmus's epilepsyseizures ::

Rasmus has idiopathic epilepsy. It has been diagnosed on 27.3.2006. He was widely examined in Animal Hospital Aisti (Tarja Jokinen). Everything was normal, EEG, MRI, brain-spinal cord -fluid and blood tests.

At the moment Rasmus doesn't have medication and we hope situation stays like this.

Latest seizure: 17.6.2010

  14.4.2005 at 22.15 - First seizure

Rasmus was sleeping and got up wobbling. He wobbled few meters and layed down. After he was layed, he hrew up. Seizure lasted one minute and Rasmus wasn't absented at any point. And he was normal
after it.

  2.1.2006 at 9.35 - Second seizure

I woke up hearing that someone is taking a piss inside. I found Rasmus pissing and wobbling from our hallway. He threw up once and after that his rear didn't carry him and he had to sit down. After that he threw up again. Seizure lasted a 0,5 minute as I saw it.

  8.11.2006 at 19.40 - Third Seizure

I was washing a carpet in our bathroom and Rasmus watched it from the door. Suddenly he collapsed on his side. Ofcourse I hurried to him and the seizure was over before I got there. It lasted on 10-15 second, but was much stronger than before. After the seizure Rasmus continued watching my washing.

  16.3.2007 at 20.40 - Fourth seizure

Rasmus was sleeping and suddenly woked up and didn't recognise our other dog (Rolle). Although he went straight to Rolle and relaxed when he got familiar smell. Rolle was the only one he didn't know, my husband and our "Rekku" were familiar to him all the time. I don't know how long this lasted, but not very long. I wasn't home at the moment.

3.5.2007 at noon - Fifth seizure

Rasmus had to take MRI after hurting his back. He had a seizure during narcosis and doctor cut it off with Phenobarbital and Diapam.

19.7.2007 at ~17.30 - Sixth and seventh seizures

Dogs were playing in the forest (in addition of our own dogs, tervueren Tinka and Alaskan malamute Aksi). They played for ten minutes and we started wondering if Rasmus is limping his rearleg. I asked him to come to me and as he came he started limping his frontleg. Soon whole dog was shaking and I realised it was a seizure. Shaking lasted less than a minute and we headed back home.

We got only few hundred meters when he got a new seizure. He layed down and started shaking. He also threw up and after that stand up. Again shaking lasted less than a minute and we headed back home again. Rasmus's walking was wobbling for a while but he could walk for himself. He was very tired after we got home.

  28.1.2008 at ~17.00 - Eight seizure

We were taking a short walk with dogs and Rolle tried to start a fight with Rasmus on our homeport. Rasmus told him not to, and I told them both to stop. We walked about hundred meters and started to wonder if Rasmus is limping his rearleg. Soon he "limped" his frontleg, it was a seizure. He was again shaking all around but otherwise he was normal. He even took a piss, and managed to stay up.

I told him to lay down and stay there for a while. After 0,5 minute he was normal. Seizure lasted about 3 minutes from the first suspicion of limping until end.

  23.8.2008 at ~10.30 - Ninth seizure

We were on our backyard in the morning. I started to think that there's something wrong with Rasmus's walking, and yes, he was shaking a bit. He sat down for a moment and then carried on with other dogs. I think that anyone else wouldn't even noticed he is having a seizure, so mild it was. It lasted about 2 minutes.

Rasmus had a Tardak-injection two weeks before this seizure.

  26.9.2008 at ~21.10 - Tenth seizure

We humans were taking a evening snack, dogs have eaten half an hour before. Rasmus got up and started wobbling. It was hard for him to stand up because our floor is very slippery. I asked him to move on carpet and the seizure was over. It lasted less than a half minute.

Again he had a Tardak-injection two weeks before this. I think that injections are the reason for latest two seizures.

4.2.2009 at night - Eleventh seizure

I woke up because our bed was shaking. Soon I realised that it was Rasmus shaking behind my back. He had also urinated under him. I don't know how long seizure has lasted but I saw it less than a ½ minute. Shaking was typical for Rasmus, not very strong.

  22.4.2010 at 22.32 - Twelfth seizure

Long time no see. Dogs had ate and came inside few moments before and Rasmus was already sleeping under our bed. He started to stand up and made some noise doing it, as always because bed is low and floor is slippery. This time the noise didn't stop and it took a moment before I realized it was a seizure!

Shaking lasted 4 minutes and Rasmus couldn't stand on the slippery floor. I told him to lay down so he doesn't fall. Shaking was typical and Rasmus listened to the commands as normal. After 4 minutes Rasmus hrew up and that was is. Rasmus has been totally normal since that.

We've had a life change because of our new familymember but Rasmus (or anyone else of the dogs) hasn't been stressed out at all. And we've been training etc. normally all the time so he hasn't been bored either. I don't know what caused this. Although in this disease it propably doesn't always need a reason anyway.

  17.6.2010 at ~22.00 - Thirteenth seizure

Rasmus woke up and it looked like he was limping his right rear leg. I wondered where he could have hurt it and asked him to come to me. After I got my hands on him, I noticed that he was shaking a bit. This lasted for a minute I think and was fortunately really mild. Rasmus was on narcosis a week before, maybe this was result from that.

  Odd behaviour

Rasmus has had some undefined seizures also. Suddenly he is scared of everything and it lasts variable time. Normally he is stable and brave so this behaviour differs from his normal behaviour totally.

Dogshow Lahti (inside) 15.1.2006 - Suddenly Rasmus was scared of everything and everyone around him. We took him outside and after coming back to the hall he was normal.

Dogshow Tampere (inside) 19.3.2006 - Same as before. He didn't seem to understand anything going around him. He was just afraid of everything. Before and after that he was totally normal.

Dogshow Lappeenranta (inside) 17.4.2006 - And again. For a moment he is afraid of everything and otherwise normal.

Finnish Speciality (outside) 30.6.2007 - As before, but this time it lasted longer. At some point he got back to normal.

Obedience in hall (inside) 1.2.2009 - We went to the hall three times, and all three times he suddenly got afraid of everything. He also got normal every time we took a brake and went outside. This behaviour repeated couple days after this milder. He had a seizure on 4.2. and after that he has been normal in training again. Could this have been related to epilepsy somehow?

Obediencetrial (outside) on 15.8.2010 - Rasmus got scared of a friend before the trial started. After that he was afraid of other people too, including the judge when we went to the ring. I tried to do things with him but it didn't work because every now and then Rasmus just jumped out of nothing and wasn't under control because of that. We haven't seen any proper seizure after this like before, I'm writing this on 22.8.2010. Epilepsy? Most likely, but not for sure of course.
